“Facing the Challenges of Global Health”, Advanced Residential Course on Poverty-Related and Neglected Tropical Diseases (ARC PRNTD 17), was held from the 17th July till the 4th August 2017 at the Public Health Laboratory Ivo de Carneri (PHL-IdC) – Pemba Island, Zanzibar Archipelago, United Republic of Tanzania.
The course was planned and promoted by the Ivo de Carneri Foundation and the PHL-IdC, under the patronage of the Ministry of Health – Zanzibar and the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation and of the following Universities and scientific Institutions , both Italian and Tanzanian: National Institute for Medical Research of Tanzania, University of Camerino, University of Milano-Bicocca, University of Naples “Federico II”, University of Rome “La Sapienza”, University of Trieste. The Italian Association Carlo Urbani (AICU) sponsored the course.
The teaching planning included: lectures, work groups, role-playing games and practical workshops (examples of active and creative learning). In addition, the participants visited facilities in Pemba, which were interesting for the course content. Each day the class closed with a “take home message” session, in which the key concepts of the day were underlined. Fridays were dedicated to the weekly “WRAP UP” with work groups and role-playing games.
